Child Custody

Child custody in Florida is based on shared parental responsibility. Parents are highly encouraged to make decisions together regarding the care of their children. This can include sharing the responsibility of making decisions about school, health care, and extracurricular activities. One parent is often granted primary residential custody, and both parents are encouraged to make decisions.

Child Support

Child support is paid on a monthly basis. Florida has guidelines for determining the amount of child support the non-custodial parent is required to pay. The amount of support is based on some of the following factors:

• Income and earnings of both parents
• Health care needs of children
• Insurance
• Childcare

The monthly financial need continues until the child is 18 or graduates high school.

Visitation

Florida's policy strives to ensure minor children have frequent contact with both parents. In addition to the shared parental responsibility, visitation is encouraged.
